My Own Little World by Matthew West
This song is speaking to present generations about the biggest obstacle that we face: complacency. We as a generation are satisfied with our "little worlds" and afraid of taking a chance on someone else's behalf. Day in and day out , we think about ourselves and we hold to our materialistic mindset, when there is so much that we could be doing! We have so much power if we only realize it, we can change the world. We can end suffering. We are the new generation of people, and we have lost sight of the bigger picture. Overcoming the obstacle of complacency is going to be very difficult, however, it is not impossible. Here are some lyrics from the song " In my own little world it hardly ever rains,
I've never gone hungry, always felt safe. Got some money in my pocket, shoes on my feet. In my own little world, population :me. What if there’s a bigger picture? What if I’m missing out? What if there’s a greater purpose I could be living right now? Outside my own little world." Basically, West realizes that he was caught up in his world, never seeing those around him that he could have helped. Robert Kennedy calls the younger generation to action in his"Day of Affirmation" speech, I believe this song is also a call to action. Although this song is not nearly as powerful or as beautiful as Kennedy's speech, it's message is clear : Look at the bigger picture.
